Great Romanian food recipes for you to try!

Want Romanian food recipes?

I have been trying to find different recipes - look at my efforts of making stuffed cabbage rolls

Alternatively try our great Mamaliga - complete with pictures!

What do you need?

Water
Coursely Ground Maize
Salt

Ingrediants for Mamaliga

Look at the next step in our famous recipe. If you look at the pictures carefully, you will see Grandma is mixing in the maize into the water and stirring, and then repeating this until she has a mixture like porridge.

Close up of mixing ingrediants

Close up of mixing ingrediants When you are happy with the mix, turn the heater onto low, but make sure you keep mixing and squishing out any lumps!

You will need to boil the mixture for anything up to twenty minutes to half an hour, depending on your stove (as you can see we use a traditional wood burning stove!).

You will need to take the time to taste it and see if it has enough salt in the mixture - if not, add a little more!

Ready to pour out

When it looks ready, remove it from the stove and gently try to loosen up the sides with a spoon. Then give it another minute or twos low heat, to get the mamaliga really ready for the next important step!

Putting out on a board

Pour it out of the saucepan onto a large wooden chopping board and then leave it to cool for a few minutes. Then take a long piece of string and cut the mamaliga into portions.

If you cannot eat all of it hot, then it is great cold the next day!

While searching for Romanian recipes, I discovered this wonderful site - ExploringRomania.com where you will be able to find an excellent section all about Romanian food. This site is packed full of useful hints and tips as you wander around Romania. Well worth the visit!

I have also found a devoted Romanian food expert at Taste of Romania, Its Cookery and Glimpses of its History, Folklore, Art, Literature and Poetry and he is a bit of an old expert on Romanian cooking and life. I was thrilled (or even honoured!) when he asked if I would give his great site a mention!
