A Romanian Brides Wedding Day
I would like you to follow a Romanian brides wedding day. Alex decides it is time to get his haircut for the big day! He is putting all his faith in the Romanian hairdresser not to create a disaster!

In Romania, you need to have both a civil and a religious wedding, and these take place in two different places. This means you need to have two sets of clothese - one for each event. By the time you are standing here, your passport and your documents have been removed to check who you are and the family is standing in front of the door. At your side will be your beautiful Romanian bride, and on the other side is your Romanian Translator, who will be explaining the proceeding to you - this is to make sure you know why you are there and what to expect in the future. A few 'Da' and you are done. The whole procedure takes about 10 minutes and there is then a very small, rapid celebration in the back with some fizzy white wine or champagne, depending on how lucky you are. Here we are signing the marriage certificate.
After the civil wedding, we had our first wedding reception. A friend of ours owns a nice villa on the richer outskirts of Bucharest, in Otopeni, and so we all went there for an informal mean. Dad is seen in this picture making his speech - he decided it was a great thing to deliever his speech in Romanian - a language he had only heard for the first time the day before. As always, nothing, but nothing stops my dad having a try at anything!
The following day, we attended a church wedding. It was really difficult to find a priest prepared to marry a catholic and a Romanian Christian Orthodox without a letter from a priest, but finally we were successful and Irina found a beautiful church, with a nice green park on the side. In Romania, you can choose the church by the location and don't need to attned it at all before hand. The service was nice - where we had to wear crowns on our heads, eat bread and drink wine three times, and then walk in a circle around the alter three times. Irina was a beautiful Romanian bride.

Here you can see how the party went. There were lots of different courses - all choosen by Irina when she caught me trying to order all the peasant dishes such as tripe soup, that I really like... I was then banned from playing with the menu, as at the end of the night, everyone hands over envelopes of money if they are happy. To cap it all, Dad gave his speech in Romanian, to great applause - he had pulled off a major success - especially as in Romania, people don't normally give speeches at the end of the wedding! The picture of Irina sitting in a chair is when it came time to remove the veil and have a head scarf - this happens at the end of the wedding, when the Romanian bride becomes a wife.
The honeymoon was unique in every sense of the word. We spent a week in the mountains and a week by the sea. What was odd about it? We had both sets of in-laws along for the ride. In 2003, Romania was still a bit like the wild west, and we decided that it was better for everyone to stick together and have a good time. It worked out well as then both parents got to know each other. The only issue on the trip was that the Romanians hate having any wind coming into the car, so one car had its windows tightly shut - and I almost died in the heat, while the other car, with the foreigners on board, had its windows open.
When you get back from the holiday, you need to return your wedding candles back to the Church. Your Godparents come with you. And then you get a second blessing - to help you on your way... Ever since 2003, I have been wonderfully and happily married to the most beautiful of Romanian Brides you will ever find - and would highly recommend a Romanian wife to anyone!
