Your Trips to Romania - The forgotten get away.

Do you often take trips to Romania? Romania is an often-overlooked weekend away, but we are only 3 hours flying time from London. This makes it great for that long weekend, a stag do (the price of beer here is ridiculously cheap and the stunning Romanian women will make you wonder if marrying a British woman was such a hot idea after all - at least any misbehavior will never get back to the shores of Britain - unless of course you did something really silly and got arrested for it!).

I have had friends pop over for a short time - enjoy a change of scene - watch me get married and then back on a plane to the UK.

We even managed to get a lot of people over in complete secret for my father-in-laws birthday party - he just wandered into my house and was surrounded by lots of wonderfully familiar faces. We often look back at this good times and wish we had done a lot more of them! My father came over completely inappropriately dressed for a freezing Romanian winter - so he was obliged to wear my pajamas under his trousers as we walked to the top of a particularly icy cold Romanian mountain near Rucar. When we got to the top, we found an isolated shepherd’s hut and having shown we know some of the same people in the valley as they did - we were soon being warmed up by strong coffee and Romanian plum brandy before carrying on our way.

Six months later, dad dropped dead with a massive heart attack after cycling down to the local police station to pick up his missing credit card. The autopsy showed his arteries were almost entirely clogged up - which means he could have gone anytime. I always wonder what would have happened if he had been on top of that impossible to access mountain - obviously our two guardian angels were working over time to stop such a shadow on his last trip to Romania.

The great thing about trips to Romania is how misunderstood this country is. The friend said there was no mobile coverage in this ex-communist state - so his work colleagues did not even bother to get in touch while he was here. In reality, Romania is a modern society with lots of mobile phones - lots of Bucharest women have several mobile phones in their wallets, one for each network hidden behind an outdated primitive image.

You can pick up a hire car directly from the airport when you take trips to Romania - you don't even need to fly directly to Bucharest as there are smaller airports scattered all over the country, though these may need skill to tie them into your itinerary. The flights are cheap - especially if you book in advance, and means your holiday starts as soon as you touch down.

An ideal destination would be to Transylvania where the stories of Dracula come from. Bran is a perfect little town for some alternative Christmas shopping. Rasnov - just down the road - has what can only be described as the nicest fortress going. They managed to persuade some Turkish prisoners to spend 20 years digging it in return for their freedom. I guess around this time there must have been a change of management as when the well was finally depth enough to provide the fortress with water, they killed the two hapless prisoners anyway - I assume it was their early anti-terrorist squad in action!

If you want a quieter time - head to Western Romania, where even Romanian comment how time seems to slow there and you will feel waves of relaxation wash over you! This is a great part of Romania to explore - to save time and money try to fly to Bucharest and then change for an internal flight.

There is another reason for making trips to Romania. Our postal system is the worst I have ever seen, and you will appear like a dream if you come loaded down with cook in sauces - especially curry based products and decent English tea - not Lipton's tea please!
