Well yet another week has slid past. I have now added all the Facebook Gizmo's to my site so that my visitors can chat more freely among each other - or so the theory goes.
While I was the most skeptical there is about the protests, would you believe they actually had an impact this week - and launched more protests! The prime minister Mr Boc stepped down and a new chap is now in his place. The rest of the government has been reorganized, and now is happily accepted by our European partner, who took the view a government is a government is a government. Though some have declared that this is a non-constitutional change and so the protests will continue as they really want the president to step down... not just the prime minister.
The weather is now getting worse. Apparently it dipped to -26C at some point in Bucharest. All I can say is it was very horrible to walk in and I was always happy to get home and drink some piping hot boiled wine (for medical reasons you understand! :-) ). As we have a very rich chap living on our street, yesterday the snow ploughs went past our door 6 times - the best one being a big snow plough, followed by a mini snow plough, followed by the boss... just to make sure it was done! Today we have a light smattering of snow, nothing too major to write home about, but certainly a wintery scene. We are now still in Code Red and Code Yellow for cold and snow and ice etc... so another day of relaxing by the computer and building websites!
Outside Bucharest, things look far worse. From the TV I can see some amazing pictures. The boats are frozen solid in the Danube and on the Black Sea. The snow is up to 6 metres deep, rising to 9 metres where the snow has drifted. There are all sorts of pictures of Romanian houses buried in snow. And of course getting to the well (under another 6 m of snow - no running water in lots of places in Romania!) and that just adds to the old people's woes.
Grandma is still with us as there is no reason to go home until the weather improves and the snows disappear a little. It is great to have her here as she loves to play with little Victor - and only needs the occasional reminder that a child which moves from his place because he is bored and wanting to do something else does not always mean he is being naughty. The funny thing he does do this week (apart from blowing raspberries and giggling furiously) is posting all he can find into the smallest possible gaps! This ranges from Cheerios under the door to his entire library of thin books under the sofa... then he comes to me with eyes full of innocence and says 'Daddy will fix it!'...
My first English - Romanian children's book about the Romanian Alphabet is almost ready! I have found it is really easy to make these books using Public Domain pictures and also lots of open source software, and so I will try to build up a collection of different English - Romanian books which children read download and read... I think I will try to sell them via Amazon (They don't sell purely Romanian books which is a shame) - so that is why I put it all in English and Romanian.
The Kindle project is going well - the children love them and they do make teaching a lot easier. Especially now I have uploaded so many books to them already that I can just use what I already have uploaded and don't need to find even more materials for them. I have also finished the website at http://www.free-guided-reading.com which has another 2000 free books for people to read if they want - all sorted by children's ages and reading skills.
I am pleased that so many people are now reading my blog - every week there are more and more people following this blog! Please keep reading and I hope you enjoy a slice of life in Romania with me.
