Romanian news
Romanian news has some of the funniest items around. You need to get your head around the fact that in Romania, showing dead bodies as and when you can is deemed a good thing. It also was the one to break the story about the 1989 Romanian revolution.
They have a News Channel called OTV - which is a bit like the British Sun newspaper - but on TV. It is amazing how much stress this particular channel causes my family. They have items on it like warning the general population that the big earthquake (the one all Romanians in Bucharest fear)... will happen that weekend, and their evidence for this is normally someone claiming to be in touch with the spirit worlds... oddly when the whole city is still standing on the Monday, nothing ever seems to be said. Some Romanians even camped out over last Easter as OTV had told them that the Big One was on its way.
The typical Romanian news paper has great joy in showing topless women throughout its newspapers, which is a bit of a problem for me, as I like to sit on the metro, reading the latest silly stories - lots of them copies from the British press, and I always get the impression that I seem to have rather too much flesh open on each page...
There is a boom in free newspapers in Romania. If you are here, I would highly recommend that you pop into any hotel or expensive looking restaurant, and pick up the free magazines as to what is happening in Bucharest - or in many of the other larger towns. It would be a shame to come here and miss some great show or exhibition.
I have started to also explore what is online. I have found this brilliant website called
www.seventimes.ro
which is a serious website and it does give you details of the what is happening around Romania in English. It lets you build up a really good ideas as to what you can expect to find in Romania in a well thought out balanced way. The fact it is in English just makes it that much easier to use.
No-one has yet been able to explain to me how the
Romania economy
actually works. If you are in a state run job, you have had to take a 25% pay cut followed by a pay freeze. There is still rampant corruption and if you are poor - the hospitals can be a complete death trap. However Bucharest is still packed with ever newer, fancier cars and the supermarket queues are as long as ever, so I don't know where all this extra money is coming from. It could come from the Romanian oil and gas companies, but I doubt it.
According to the Romanian News, the Romanian economy continues to spiral downwards at a terrific rate. We have taken out an almost 1 billion euro loan (900 million euros) to keep us ticking over. The poor are begging every more hard for what you have in your pocket and prices keep rising. Sadly the salaries are starting to rise only for the very, very poorest.
Look in the local Romanian newspapers or Romanian websites for
Romanian jobs
but don't hope for too much if you are coming from overseas - give up all together if you don't have a highly original skill set, such as skills to teach or manage a company effectively.
Romanian communism was a key feature of Romanian politics. It is still easy to see the positive and negative impacts of Romanian communism left around the city.
I have also looked at different
Romanian leaders
and discuss how each has helped or hindered his country's overall development.
