Culture in Romania - the Romanians love to share their songs with you

The culture in Romania continually surprises me. I have reached a point where I am desperately trying to record all the culture in Romania as it never ceases to amaze me what Romanians can achieve when it comes to traditional singing.

The preparations for the Romania National Day show were ridiculously long - with weeks and weeks of rehearsals going into it all. At the end, when the polished product was in grasp - I asked if my class could watch the final rehearsal. I was told this s impossible - as my children were not Romanian and so would get bored but I was more than welcome to spend an evening in school to watch it. With one thing and another, I couldn't so missed a true spectacular.

Luck would have it that a day later, my ever-trusty Romanian friend, complete with an hour of the show (it was a 2 hour spectacular) with the film on her memory stick.

The following week, she decided to repeat her parts of the show for the whole school. I am pleased to say that this part of the show completely blew me away. Check out the young child singer near the end of part one of the show.

Part 1

Part 2

The children clearly enjoyed the show and of course, I have added the show to the school website. It is funny to think that some of these little child stars could one day become that beautiful twenty-something restaurant singer you need to give your full attention to rather than eating another plate of fish and cabbage.

I challenge any other school to produce a finer example of culture I Romania. Apparently we even outdid many of the Romanian state schools, who are famed for their ability to put on traditional Romanian dance shows and repeating Romanian poetry.

At the end of the Romania music school assembly, (which rather over-ran!) we discovered the school buses had packed up and gone, leaving rather a large gaggle of tear-strewn children. The good news being they were all collected and shuttled off home as all the buses had to return to collect them.

The odd thing about this site is the more I investigate the culture in Romania, the deeper it seems to go. I am now finding I am appreciating the Romanian talent more and more. The problem with Romanian culture is a lot of it on first inspection does look rather twee and naff, but when you see how much time and effort goes into making it shine as an example for twee and naffness, you start to appreciate it does have far greater depths. When you chat to the terribly proud 8 year old girls about their beautiful Romanian outfits, all of which have been beautifully embroided, you discover that many are over 100 years old - made by some long forgotten grandmother - showing the length of time Romanian dances have been twee and naff goes way back into history, giving the twee heritage and making the terrible naff more substantial.

I hope you also find the time to check out the photo collection I have built up of Romanian children and adults dressed in their finest traditional Romanian clothes and singing their hearts out about their great love of this nation.

If you have any photos of your own showing Romanian traditional national dress, please take the time to share it with me and the hundreds of readers I now have on a daily basis.
